“Sometimes I think no one should’ve listened to anything I said before I had a child,” I texted a coach friend.
“SAME!”, she texted back.
“I thought I was skilled in pivoting from running my business. But with Eça, it’s like every hour is unpredictable.”
“And yet Atomic Habits is a gazillion week NY Times best seller!” she replied.
Of course there’s something to learn in James Clear’s Atomic Habits (AH).
And I’m not talking about another case study of how being a white male gifts you more perceived authority; The AH quote I see the most, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” is something Mothers, marginalized activists, and the voting block of American Black women have been articulating and executing on since forever.
But what works when your atomic habits implode because of circumstances beyond your control?
And what if you don’t have the structural power that gives you more control of your time and life choices like James Clear, Tim Ferris, Andrew Huberman, [insert biohacker]?
Like when….
Hand Foot and Mouth disease closes daycare. Again.
You have body pain and mood swings from perimenopause, postpartum, or your period.
You’re grieving from your Mother passing, who you were caregiving, and are burnt-out.
What will work for you, the person who has lots of responsibilities and less control over your time?
As Dr. Michelle Segar, a behavior change expert, published in the American Journal of Health Promotion,
“There is little research support for the idea that automatic habits can drive lasting changes in complex lifestyle behaviors like exercise [and eating].
People’s best-laid plans, or automatic habits, may also interact with the ever-changing needs of their schedule, work, and caregiving responsibilities (eg, for children and/or aging parents)”.
Creating or holding onto your atomic habits is not a “you” problem. It’s that the current mainstream world of habit change doesn’t address a real, unpredictable, and marginalized life.
(Habit studies are often done with lab animals (or college students). The literal sterile conditions are laughable).
However, more diverse researchers are finding what works for those of us with more responsibilities and complex lives to maintain healthy eating and exercise.
And what they’re finding is the simplicity and “hacking” of straight forward habits like remembering your supplements or to box breathe when stressed is a weakness for change and lives that are more unpredictable.
Because change like eating and exercise is more complex. It requires nuance, not “automatic” thinking. For example:
A client had tried mindful eating before enrolling in WAIETN. She was trying to limit distractions, slow down with meals, and be present with her food. “This production around food and how lonely I feel eating like this makes me more stressed!”.
As she made connections that were elusive for years in WAIETN, she discovered loneliness was the root cause of her stress eating. For her, listening to podcasts while eating and not focusing on her food led to less stress (i.e. loneliness) and eating better.
“I deserve this eating” was happening to a WAIETN client at 3 pm and at night. Instead of trying generic habits to stop this, she realized the root of her stress eating at 3 pm was often from procrastinating on tasks and the night time eating was from hustling all day. Two different root causes that required two different, nuanced approaches.
Why Am I Eating This Now? Live: Align Your Life and Eating will teach you how to navigate the nuance and unpredictability of your stress so you can stop turning to food.
This is a skill-set anyone who is willing can learn.
The best part?
This meets you where you are in your real, demanding life. It’s what I used to resolve my plantar fasciitis, insomnia, and lose 20 pounds over the last three years, while being the most stressed and simultaneously running a business (Oh, and did I mention I was postpartum, menopausal, and pandemic parenting?!) This is just the stress I share publicly. There’s been so much more grief, heartbreak and change.
Whether you want a sustainable solution to feeling great in your body, a rebel who doesn’t do well with rules, and/or want to further extract the patriarchy that makes you think you’re the problem, my evidence-based, client proven WAIETN Live will teach you how to show up differently in your real stress so you don’t turn to food.
It’s a useful skill-set in a world that will only demand more change from us.
WAIETN Live is now open for registration today thru Monday September 18.

“I love the community so much! I used to be so structured with my food and workout to a point of extreme stress, I ran myself into the ground. I would binge to try to replenish. Ali’s work gave me language and concepts about nutrition and safety to see food and movement as restorative and replenishing and has totally changed the way I view food and body. Working through WAIETN was crucial to my current success with Truce with Food. Join us – we’d love to welcome you.” –Liz Merci

“I can’t recommend WAIETN enough. I learned how to collaborate with the polarized ways I viewed my days – the good and the bad judgements I had about being healthy versus not being healthy. I really learned how to soften that protective side of myself. You learn so much! I’m starting to reframe my days and get a better sense of my relationship to my food and the way I relate to myself in my work. It’s becoming so much more meaningful and progressive. It’s not an overnight fix!” –Erin

“I’m healing decades of battling my food. Why Am I Eating This Now? gave me a framework to start looking at food differently and from an emotional place. I’ve been able to put the pieces together and find more clarity around food noise and my beliefs about it. In Truce with Food, I am creating a new story with the support of Ali and the other people in the community.” –Kinsie
