In a nutshell, Truce with Food is the solution to figuring out why food is worth it in the moment yet not afterwards.
Here’s a little peek into the program.
In the first month of the program, you discover what makes food harder than necessary. “Seeing” your story is so challenging, because in your head it sounds logical, reasonable and justified.
Take Alana’s* story. Prior to Truce with Food, she followed the conventional diet trick, “Eat before you go to an event.” Despite not being hungry, she ended up eating cheese and cold cuts at the benefit she attended.
Her “story” produced emotional pressure that sounded logical:
Using the Truce with Food tools, she saw how her story generated these thoughts:“They spent the money to provide snacks for people. It’s a non-profit, I need to eat to show my appreciation.
I didn’t really want to talk to anyone. I enjoyed the show but didn’t want to analyze it. So, I stuffed my face.
I really wanted 1 glass of white but opted for the red which is better.”
And then to justify her choices and story, she thought:
“Everything I ate was ‘on plan’ (low carb, high fat). The red wine is good for me. I can exercise more tomorrow to combat the extra calories.”
Once Alana saw her thoughts stemming from the pressure her story produced, she exclaimed, “Can I just say JESUS!!!!!????? Lol. My head is exploding re-reading this. It’s so <!@$%#%> simple now.”
This is just one leg of a journey as it unfolded during the program.
Our stories protect the “good” identities we love about ourselves:
The healthy one.
The fun one.
Different.
For Alana, in this scenario, it was the grateful guest.
You see, my clients are masters at being good. This is reflected in their accumulation of gold stars. It’s why they are so often highly regarded professionally.
And…
The orientation of being good focuses on the perceived satisfaction and expectations of others. As women, we have been conditioned to believe power comes from controlling other people’s reactions. To want to be wanted.
If there’s a situation where you don’t know how to get a gold star, your mind will start to over-analyze through various possibilities.
It’s happening without your conscious awareness but the results are still the same as you poured through internal data and over analyzed a situation.
Exhaustion. Frustration. Anxiety.
As a result of the uncertainty, you do what you know. You eat. And you eat in ways that are frustrating as hell yet you preserve your perceived good identity.
This conditioning won’t be easily uprooted. It’s nearly impossible to discover. Weight loss and clean-eating programs don’t even know to look at your story and the way it drains your willpower.
In Truce with Food, it unfolds easily, faster and with a lot of laughs thrown in.
The Truce with Food tools continued to set Alana on a path of liberation as she learned (drumroll)…
There’s other rewards aside from gold stars she loves more!
As Alana shared,
“What a relief to disconnect from the triggers that lead to unwanted food habits. I have more control over the option of eating and/or drinking when I meet up with someone or go to an event. The food is still there but it’s not a crutch or an excuse. I feel lighter. I’m buzzing with excitement! Thank you, Ali!!!!!”
“It’s so <!@$%#%> simple now.” One of the highest compliments of Truce with Food in all the land.
The more Alana was able to see and transform her story, her food choices improved without the old effort. She noticed what she called a “knock-off” effect: for the first time in her life, she’s easily not overeating when she cooks for the week or her husband cooks and serves meals.
I call this the ripple effect from the new mental framework she has to see all the places her story is controlling her life.
Without identifying your good girl story and transforming it with a more interesting definition of success, you’ll be playing whack-a mole with food “temptations” as you make food much harder than it has to be.
Truce with Food gives you that power. It’s a life-changing skill that forever alters how you eat, but it is also about how you live. It’s why clients feel so empowered: they discover their true, authentic self.
PS: *Alana is not her real name and she gave me permission to share her story.
