If you follow me on Instagram, you know Carlos and I recently moved. I feel like a new woman! A main reason is I now walk to my office, a variety of places to work-out, two parks and access healthy food.
The freedom of not needing a car changes every aspect of my life because a feeling of ease is present in my daily routine. This changes what Dr. Antonio Damasio describes in his book Descartes’ Error as one of my “background feelings”. His theory is background feelings are the major influences on how we feel and make decisions about our lives (more so than the big stresses like a move or a job change).
While called background feelings, these feelings are very much front and center. If you’ve battled with food for awhile, the compounding casualties have most likely normalized below-average feelings of freedom. In place of freedom, you probably feel “on guard”, like you need a plan around food, social events, nighttime, and trigger foods (basically, life!).
Or like my clients and myself, when we discover how much power food has (often more than doctors or medication) in managing diagnosis like depression or Hashimoto’s. There’s a never before felt sense of agency and awe that comes from knowing your bodies capacity. I call it the Boss mindset because you feel like a total boss.
The more you battle food, the more this “gearing up” feeling permeates your life, as it crowds out any remaining freedom and ease you felt.
As a result, you feel increasingly trapped by your body and certain aspects of your life. Your moods fluctuate drastically, depending on the scale and work achievements (or lack thereof) and how “ahead” you are in other areas of your life.
The root issue blocking your food freedom isn’t food. It’s the battle or winning/losing feelings you bring to life. You have to transform the battle feeling itself.
You’re probably aware of your front and center food and body battle. Yet it can be tricky to see how this spills out into the rest of your life.
Some of the most popular Insatiable episodes are the ones with clients and listeners who share their journey to the kind of food freedom you’re unlikely to hear about in women’s magazines and definitely not from your doctor because it’s so rare.
I’m sharing with you the inspiring client stories I get to witness everyday. What’s possible when you are fed up with the fixing and fighting of your body is to remember your vivaciousness and vitality in its full capacity.
Body liberation, especially for women, isn’t really a “thing”.
YET!
These clients stories can provide a way forward since those of us who are on the path to liberation, are drawing it as we go. Ever since patriarchal religions, most of us haven’t experienced personal agency with our body.
But here’s the Radical Truth for Every Body: There’s more freedom, agency and vitality available to you more than any other time in history.
More than your Mother.
Your Grandmother.
And you by liberating yourself, you can live in a body and life based on your choices. When you heal yourself, you create even more freedom for your Mom, sister, brother, friends and children.
